Off the Rack & Up the Wall

Beautiful Things, Color, Style

Ask any vintage store owner what’s the hardest thing to display, and we bet they’ll say purses and hats. Unless you have a neverending supply of mannequins, there are very few places to perch a hat that look natural. And those darling purses that you can imagine a 50s starlet carrying to a premiere tend to fall flat (literally and figuratively) when laid on a shelf.

But we love to show off our accessories—a hat can add instant vintage flair to an outfit, and unlike those frustratingly tiny vintage shoes, purses are one-size-fits-all. What to do?

One answer is this funky-looking contraption at the front of the store. Each hat sits on a spring, so all you have to do is pull the corresponding string, and the desired hat will bounce right into your hand.

And if you make your way to the back of the store, you’ll notice that what used to be empty wall space has been turned into vertical displays of purses and hats:

Unlike creeping vines, which can ruin a garden, creeping purses should be encouraged to climb all the way to the ceiling.

Pluck a hat off our hat wall and make it the cherry on top of your outfit!

With a little three-dimensional thinking, we’ve lifted–literally!–some of our best accessories out of boringness and into the spotlight where they belong.

Sugary Sweet Sunglasses

This weekend we ventured out to The Sugar Shack— the best place in Ithaca to grab an icy treat. Not only do they have delicious shaved ice, the shack itself is insanely colorful! We thought it was the ideal place to show off our new round of sunglasses in the store, as well as some beach ready vintage wears.

This 1980s crop top sweatshirt comes straight from “WIPE OUT BEACH U.S.A.”,  and looks best when paired with bold rimmed shades and a rad attitude.

This romper falls right in line with the 80s surfer vibe. The insanity of the neon can barely be captured in a photo, it really glows! Any of our club-master styled glasses complete this stand-out look.

Who says you can only wear one pair? All models shown in this frame come in at least three alternative color options, all currently on the floor.

Petrune

Channel your inner 1970s grandma with these rose colored specs– they’re massive and entirely too much fun to wear.

While these sunglasses have seen this blog before, we think they pair well with this 60s cut knit dress. The stripes are unexpectedly flattering, and the weight of the fabric is great for cooler summer nights.

Even the pups agree– the shades here at Petrune are perfectly tasteful for summer! As always, our sunglasses run at $15 per pair, or two for $25.

Special thanks to photographer Angelina Castillo and the ladies of The Sugar Shack.

As part of our continuing work with local apothecary, Roots Rose Radish, we’ve happily replenished our collection with fresh new products. These vintage inspired shells hold our bergamint lip balm! Adorable and easy to spot in a cluttered purse.

Another of our local favorites, Carrie George, is known for her inspiring up-cycling abilities; turning vintage leather pieces into wearable bags and earrings. This buttery soft blue number has both handles and a cross body strap, and is accented by four differently colored leather highlights!

Our lip balm comes in two enticing flavors, “bergamint” and luscious rose. It’s a steal at only $5!

The Carrot Rose face cream is non-greasy and light weight– the perfect replacement for chemical heavy moisturizers. Vitamin E and aloe vera make this batch extra nourishing. $30

The Calendula Geranium Body Butter is wildly soothing, with indulgent ingredients like shea butter, avocado oil, vitamin E and calendula oil. Geranium notes dominate the scent, which is strongly reminiscent of a Parisian macaroon fresh off the shelf at LaDurée. Yum! $25

Keep the men in your life groomed and gorgeous with our hand crafted beard oil. Sandalwood, rosemary oil and cedarwood work together to create smooth and strong facial hair. We think of this as a great alternative for anyone overwhelmed by cologne. $25
