The 1940s

brown coat

In the early-mid 1940s, World War II was in full force. The style was very much like the late-1930s in that the hemline stayed right below the knee, yet the shoulders became even more emphasized by a tiny waist and even larger hats. Fashion began to trickle up rather than down as Hollywood began to look to street styles. Rationing beginning in 1942 limited the amount of fabric and decorations in women's wear. Sober suits were livened up with matching accessories. It was not uncommon for such exotic accessories as lizard and crocodile bags to be seen. The overall look was structured and clean--very militaristic and seemingly influenced by the war.

In the late 1940s, World War II had ended and soldiers returned home. Rationing was over and women's fashion began to change significantly following Christian Dior's 1947 runway show. His designs came to be known as the "New Look." This new look consisted of longer skirts that made the ankle the new focal point. His skirts made ample use of the no longer rationed fabric and were very full consisting of yards upon yards of fabric. Shoulders became softer and the strapless look began at this time as well as prints becoming the new fashion. Make-up became more wholesome and the woman became more ladylike. The bikini made its debut during this time as well.
