The 1920s

twenties coat

In the early 1920s, a transition from the 1910s is evident as the styles remained more or less rectangular. It was the beginning of the undefined waist--the drop waist. There was no emphasis on the chest. Besides the decorative beading existent, the overall look was very boyish.

In the mid-1920s, the skirt rose to right below the knee. Women completed their outfits with stockings and close-fitting hats known as cloche hats, into which they tucked their short Henna-red bobs.

In the late-1920s, styles typical of what were known as "flappers" are evident. There was more emphasis on the seamline and shaping. Asymmetrical hems were abundant with short fronts and long backs perfect for dancing at jazz clubs to the body contorting Charleston. Many fabrics at this time were heavily beaded and cut on the bias (at an angle) for a better fit to the body.
